The days are getting longer and hotter. Summer is upon us and all creatures, big and small, are feeling the heat. If you walk outside and instantly notice how warm it is, imagine how your dog or cat must feel. It’s like a human wearing a fur coat outside when it’s 98! The core body temperature of animals is normally higher than humans, but if a dog or cat is exposed to the heat for too long, their body temperatures can rise to a dangerous level very quickly. As often as people hear about the dangers of exercising their pets in the blazing heat of the day, we still see a lot of folks running or biking with their pets. Please be advised that this can be a very dangerous and even fatal decision for your pet. Our animals depend on us to keep them safe and happy, and although your dog may enjoy the exercise, he or she may still succumb to the heat if proper precautions are not taken. We strongly advise that you do not exercise your dog during the hottest parts of the day, but if you do, please be prepared to protect both you and your pet from the dangers of the heat.
