January 29th is National Seeing Guide Dog Birthday. 87 years ago, the first Seeing Eye Dog School was opened in Tennessee. The opening of the school marked the beginning of a revolutionary process in which dogs would provide assistance to people with special needs. Guide dogs aren’t just for the blind; they help people with an array of issues including, but not limited to PTSD, medical handicaps, and mental handicaps. These special dogs provide people with a sense of freedom and independence that they may not have without the help of their guide dogs. From all of us at Hyde Park Veterinary Clinic, we wish all of you special guide dogs and the training academies a very Happy Birthday!
