Tax Season

bigstockphoto_Woman_With_Dog_At_Sunset_493260Its tax season, and this is the time of year that we in the veterinary profession hear more than anything, “I wish I could claim my pet’s expenses on my tax forms”. Sound familiar? It may be because you’ve had the same thought each tax season. Unfortunately, claiming your pet as a dependent, regardless of whether you love your pet like a child or not, will land you in some hot water with the IRS if you were to ever be audited. As with many things in life, there is always a silver lining. If your pet is a guard dog, a guide dog, or if you have a pet that is part of a business, you actually can claim your pet’s expenses! Of course, this requires some additional work and documentation, but the option is available. Check out this article from the Huffington Post regarding your pet and your taxes.
