Its tax season, and this is the time of year that we in the veterinary profession hear more than anything, “I wish I could claim my pet’s expenses on my tax forms”. Sound familiar? It may be because you’ve had the same thought each tax season. Unfortunately, claiming your pet as a dependent, regardless of whether you love your pet like a child or not, will land you in some hot water with the IRS if you were to ever be audited. As with many things in life, there is always a silver lining. If your pet is a guard dog, a guide dog, or if you have a pet that is part of a business, you actually can claim your pet’s expenses!
