Sunday September 28th marked the 7th annual World Rabies Day

Today, rabies remains a worldwide concern killing more than 55,000 people every year.  Of that, 60% infected are children under the age of 15 living in impoverished rural communities in Africa and Asia.  Rabies is a viral, zoonotic disease transmitted through saliva or tissues from one infected mammal to another.  It attacks the central nervous system which eventually results in death.  This is the deadliest disease on earth with a 99.9% fatality rate.  In human cases, 90% are directly caused from exposure to an infected dog.  Bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes and coyotes are also known to be important reservoirs of the disease.  What can you do???  Vaccinate your pets and keep them away from wildlife that can spread the disease.  RABIES IS 100% PREVENTABLE!  Here at Hyde Park Veterinary Clinic, we will donate a rabies vaccine to a dog in Africa for each we administer this week 9/29 – 10/3.  If you would like to donate or learn more about the global problem please visit http://rabiesalliance.org/world-rabies-day/  #TogetherAgainstRabies
